10 Cities Where Women Outearn Their Partners

10 Cities Wzu siche Women Outearn Their Partners10 Cities Where Women Outearn Their Partners Despite the growing prevalence of women in the workforce, the zentralwert earnings of women over the age of 25 was $32,679 in 2017, with mens zentralwert earnings for that same age group at $46,152, per U.S. Census Bureau data, who estimated that women only earn about 71% of their male counterparts. The reasons for this discrepancy are stridently debated, with theories ranging from personal preferences to mismatched family responsibilities, cultural pressure, institutional compensation or advancement bias. Whatever combination of factors are keeping womens pay low, the fact remains that female workers make less than their male counterparts - both at work and at home. Our new analysis takes a closer look at pay differences between men and women to see how it affects couples. To find out whether some places are mora likely to have a balance between male and female breadwinners, w e analyzed microdata from the American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census for the 50 largest metros in the country. In an ideal world, men and women would be equally likely to be the breadwinner of a couple. But our analysis found that in the 50 largest metros, women were the main breadwinner in less than 31% of couples households. In the 10 major U.S. cities with the highest rates of couples with female breadwinners, roughly three in 10 couples have a woman earning more than her partner. This is a contrast to other surveys that have found higher rates of female breadwinners, such as 49% of women who said they were the primary breadwinner in an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll. The difference in these findings could be attributed to single women or single mothers who are the households sole income earners. Women may be more likely to be breadwinners in these surveys that include those who report theyre elend competing with a partner for that title. When they are paired up, h owever, our analysis shows that women are less likely to be the higher earner. Heres a closer look at the 10 major U.S. cities that had the highest rates of female breadwinners.Women who are partnered up are the most likely to be the breadwinner if they live in Hartford. Here, 31.3% of coupled women outearn their partner. This could be thanks to the higher parity of pay in this city, where the gap between men and womens earnings shrinks to just 17.8%.Next is Minneapolis, which has almost the same rate of female breadwinners, with 31.2% of coupled women earning more than their partners.Minneapolis also took the No. 2 spot in our ranking of the best cities for working women. Its high ranking is due to a number of factors, but its a true standout for low unemployment among women and decent workplace protections for pregnant women and mothers. In Columbus, 30.7% of partnered women are the breadwinners. Overall, women here make about $0.19 less per dollar than their male counterparts, wel l in line with the average among all 50 cities included in this analysis.Providence, R.I. has a female breadwinning rate of 30.5%. This is no surprise, given that it was the eighth-best city for working women in our 2018 study. While the gender pay gap is above average here, at 19.9%, Providence has above-average rates of women in management positions along with better policies for maternity and parental leave.Among women in Baltimore who are part of a couple, 30.2% outearn their partners. Here, women earn just 18.8% less than men, giving them a better chance of landing pay that beats their significant others salary. The third-best city for working women, Sacramento, also has one of the highest rates of female breadwinners 30.0%.It offers a lower pay gap between genders, with women earning just 14.6% less than men. Sacramento also gets a boost from Californias robust policies and benefits for pregnancy, maternity and family leave.Boston is the next city with the highest rate of couple d households for which women are the breadwinners, at 29.6%. The gender pay gap here is 18.9%, which is just below average.Next is another top city for working women, San Francisco. Here, the gap in median pay by gender is 18.7% and women outearn their partners 29.5% percent of the time. As another Californian city, women workers in San Francisco are also likely to benefit from strong parental and family work policies. In Memphis, women are the breadwinners in 29.4% of couples households - thats despite its ranking as the second-worst city for women. It has just a few redeeming factors, however, such as the above-average number of female managers and the below-average childcare costs in Memphis.Couples in Richmond are among those most likely to be led by a female breadwinner, with 29.2% of women out-earning their partners. Women here earn $0.19 less for every $1 male workers earn, only slightly above the average. Still, working women in Richmond are more likely to receive employer-p rovided health care and more affordable child care costs, which can offset this pay gap.Overall, this study is another sign of how women are often behind when it comes to pay. The gender pay gap is a big contributor to the low rate of female breadwinners, but it affects more than just women. When a woman is paid less, this impacts her partner too. The entire household comes up short, setting back financial goals such as paying down debt , building security and savings and managing money day-to-day.Some women will also feel the pain of the wage gap more than others, too. Same-sex couples comprised of two female earners, for example, will be doubly hit by the setbacks of the gender pay gap. Women who are the sole breadwinners might also find that theyre having to support their family on less pay than many men in the same position. And for women who earn less than their partner, a separation or divorce can be particularly problematic for their finances. Many of these factors are outsid e of U.S. womens immediate control - but that makes it all the more important to focus on improving their finances where they can. Here are some ways women can work to close, offset or compensate for the gender pay gap.Work on increasing your income. The top cities are proof that the gender pay gap doesnt have to be universal, and many women are finding ways to close or even overcome it. Take a look at your current pay and do some research through sites like Glassdoor to figure out if its fair. If its not, it might be time to ask to be paid what youre worth, either with your current employer or a new one.You can also look out for career training and opportunities that could act as stepping stones to higher-paying positions. You can even create your own opportunities to boost your income and grow your skills with a side hustle.Share costs fairly. There are a lot of ways for couples to manage their money together, so look into different methods and decide together on one thats equit able. If your partner earns twice as much as you, for example, does it really make sense to split expenses 50-50? Discuss how you can work with differences in pay to ensure that both assets and expenses are equally and fairly shared.Make savings a priority. Women in a couple must save for their own future, regardless of what they earn. It can be wise to have your own checking or savings accounts that are held in your name alone, where you can build financial security independent of your partner. Its also wise to set up your own retirement accounts and contribute to those regularly, as well.Manage debt wisely. Debt can be a huge source of stress for couples. On top of that, debt accrued in marriage can be considered jointly shared, making you equally responsible for its repayment even if your spouse took it out. So its smart to practice good budgeting habits , live within your means and avoid getting into debt . Even if youre not married, your or your partners debt will still affect shared money goals and lower the debtors ability to contribute as equally. Work on paying debt off faster , and look into ways to lower costs such as credit card consolidation. While women with a partner are still less likely to be the breadwinners than partnered men, it doesnt have to hold back their finances. Choose a significant other who values an equal partnership and practices sound financial management. Aim for higher-paying positions at work to try to close the gender gap. Then improve your own money skills and knowledge so you can make the most of your income. This article was originally published on Magnify Money . It is reprinted with permission.

What does clean eating even mean 5 things to know

What does 'clean eating' even mean 5 things to know What does 'clean eating' even mean 5 things to know When I was 21 years old, I cut gluten and dairy out of my diet.I wasn’t lactose intolerant. I didn’t have celiac disease. Truth is, I’d been reading a lot of blogs (it was 2013, after all) and had noticed the gluten-free, dairy-free trend among many of the glamorous and beautiful women I followed. Their bright, fresh, beautiful lifestyles featured plenty of vegetables, the occasional smoothie, and a healthy dose of aspirational optimism.A year later, I entered my first weight-lifting phase. My meals became lean and protein-packed - Tupperware stuffed with chicken breasts and broccoli overtook my fridge. The year after that, I tried going vegan. I’d just watched the documentary Forks over Knives, and, horrified by the idea that my carnivore ways were making me fat and sick, I attempted to overhaul my diet to be completely plant-based, not a refined food or animal product in sight.During each of these phases, the phrase “clean eating” hovered at the forefront of my mind. Ea t clean. Fuel my body. Avoid “bad” foods. I experimented, hungered, and struggled in search of the version of “clean” that worked for me.I know now what I didn’t know then: That all three of those dietary phases were just different manifestations of the same problem: I loved finding ways to hate my body and obsess about food. The “clean eating” movement began as a well-intentioned effort to encourage people to eat more vegetables and less processed food. It’s since exploded into the zeitgeist with such force it’s become downright mainstream: search #eatclean on Instagram and you’ll find more than 47 million photos. Of Amazon’s bestselling cookbooks, 18 out of 20 are health food related. Almond milk and oat milk arrived on grocery store shelves. Between 2009 and 2014, the number of Americans on gluten-free diets nearly quadrupled.Eating clean and green has never been more popular - and yet the term can be interpreted so many different ways. What does “clean eat ing” actually mean?At its core, “clean eating” means consuming only unprocessed, whole foods. However, what constitutes a food as “unprocessed” and “whole” can be deeply subjective. Do grains count? Some would say no, while others exalt in the glory of whole wheat and brown rice pasta. What about dairy? Plenty of people would say milk is whole, and yet many gurus within the health space consider the entire food group irredeemable. What began as something of a universal truth - vegetables are good for you, processed foods are not - snowballed into a highly-commercialized belief system complete with its own factions, splinter groups, and (yes) extremists. Somewhere along the way, it convinced people like me I can only truly “be well” if I drink cashew milk and collagen smoothies. What makes food ‘dirty’?Don’t get me wrong: I love and appreciate healthy food. I understand that, in many ways, “eating clean” is extreme because it’s needed to be. In a country where soft drink sizes rival literal buckets, added sugar lurks where you’d least expect it, and obesity rates are spiraling out of control… is it really a surprise that a health food movement would rise up to challenge a fast food world?“Our food system is in desperate need of reform. There’s a danger that, in fighting the nonsense of clean eating, we end up looking like apologists for a commercial food supply that is failing in its basic task of nourishing us,” wrote food journalist Bee Wilson for The Guardian. “Shouldn’t we give clean eating due credit for achieving the miracle of turning beetroot and kale into objects of desire?”#EatClean is the equal, opposite reaction to a seriously screwed-up food system. Newton’s Third Law, but with coconut oil.But can there be too much of a good thing? While encouraging people to eat fresh, healthy food instead of drive-through cheeseburgers is great, the movement runs the risk of providing people another outlet for food obsession.“It has a perfectionist, black-and-white feel to it. Food is now categorized as either ‘clean’ or ‘unclean.’ Perfectionism generates anxiety and demoralization because it sets an unattainable goal,” wrote Dr. Sherry Pogato for Psychology Today. “The perfectionist dieter feels failure every time she eats something ‘unclean.’ ”I wrote recently about my experience living (and eating) in Stockholm, Sweden. While living there, I ate bread with butter and cheese daily, along with an impressive amount of full-fat cappuccinos and wine. While I still ate plenty of vegetables, a hefty portion of the food I ate there would be considered “unclean.” Oddly enough, I’d never felt better in my life. I walked every day, exercised some, and consumed nutrient-dense foods - but also didn’t feel guilt overindulging in other foods I enjoyed.I was, in a word, moderate. When I was stateside, that moderation was much harder to maintain. America is a country of extremes. “Why do we find it easier to do the Atkins diet or a gluten-free diet than to just be sensible and practice moderation? Sugar is obviously bad for us, but I’m not going to give up a brownie once in awhile,” Chef and food writer Gizzi told British Vogue. “There are some foods out there that are dirty. I mean, there are some really dirty burgers out there, and junk foods have grim ingredients lists. But burgers can be clean and brownies can be clean â€" use good ingredients and make them yourself at home. As far as I’m concerned, the sensible thing is to have as varied a diet as possible most of the time, and every once in awhile, just say fuck it.”I’m inclined to listen to Gizzi. Here are three tips to practice more moderation with food:Cook at home when you canLife gets crazy, so eating every meal at home might not be feasible - but aim to cook more meals than you don’t. This way, you can make sure you’re getting essential nutrients the majority of the time and can rest easy when you help yourself to that donut at work or eat out for lunch on a busy day. Check out The Everygirl’s weekly meal prep ideas here.Say no to fad diets and trendsGenerally speaking, any diet asking you to omit entire food groups is designed to deliver fast (but completely unsustainable) weight-loss results. They’re popular because of the instant gratification they provide, but they aren’t suited to long-term success - which is why 97 percent of dieters gain back the weight they lose. Making small positive changes - like walking more or eating extra servings of veggies per day - will improve your health in ways that will actually stick.Be generous with yourselfYou are a smart, capable woman with too much shit to do to waste any more time at war with your body. Cut yourself some slack and remember that life (and food!) is meant to be enjoyed. I know this sort of paradigm shift is easier said than done, but start putting in the work to get there. Treating your bo dy with respect doesn’t just mean eating salad and hitting the gym. It means recognizing it for all the awesome stuff it lets you do - and quitting punishing it just because you feel you should. This article first appeared on The EveryGirl.

7 Things You Should Never Do When Beginning a New Job

7 Things You Should Never Do When Beginning a New Job 7 Things You Should Never Do When Beginning a New Job Beginning a new job is exciting and terrifying at the same time. It gives you the opportunity to start over, learn new things, refresh your skills, take on new challenges, and even make some new work friends. While that all sounds great, you may be worried about whether your new coworkers will be welcoming and if you will impress your boss. These seven tips will help you get off to a good start as you make this transition: 1. Dont Assume Anything About Details Like Your Hours Your manager or the human resources department should let you know when to arrive at work and where to go when you get there.  If its a couple of days before you are set to start your job and no one has given you those details, call or email your contact person. Dont assume you know when to get there and risk arriving late.   Also, find out where you have to go when you get to your workplace. Dont waste time wandering around while you try to figure it out. You wont be on time, and you will feel stressed out before you even begin your first day of work. 2. Dont Ignore Coworkers Offers of Help Graciously accept assistance from your coworkers.  Dont worry that it will make you look helpless. Many people welcome the opportunity to help newcomers. It makes them feel good to do it, and it can form the foundation of a good workplace relationship. 3. Dont Turn Down a Lunch Invitation Another way to get relationships with your coworkers off to a good start is to take them up on any lunch invitations. If someone invites you to share a meal, he or she is probably just trying to get to know you better and help you feel less out of place. Everyone knows what its like to begin a new job. Resist the temptation to meet up with your former coworkers instead of going out with your new ones no matter how much you miss them. 4. Dont Get Caught Up in Office Gossip Whether its over lunch or around the proverbial water cooler, gossip happens in every workplace. Neither ignore or share it.  Keep your ears open but your mouth closed. You may learn valuable information, for example, your bosss foul mood is due to his having a difficult time at home, and he isnt always like this. Dont contribute anything to the conversation. Also, keep in mind that not everything you hear is true. 5. Dont Be Unwilling to Learn How to Do Something a New Way Even if your previous job duties are essentially the same at your new job, treat this transition as an opportunity to change things up. Be open to learning new techniques for performing the same or similar tasks. These new methods may be better, but even if they arent a significant improvement, learning new  ways to perform your work will keep things interesting. It can save you from boredom and make you better at your job. 6. Dont Complain About Your Former Boss or Coworkers When you complain about your  old boss and coworkers, even if they were extremely annoying, it allows your current colleagues to create a story about what they think happened. You may assume they will cast you as the hero of your tale, but since they dont know you yet, they may instead see you as the villain. Your new coworkers may wonder if you will speak poorly of them when you are at your next job. Share your gripes with your friends and family or, better yet, just drop the whole thing. Youre in a new and hopefully better place now. 7. Dont Share Personal Information It is usually unwise to share personal information with your coworkers, but it is a particularly bad idea when you first begin working with them. You need time to determine who will keep that information confidential, who will spread gossip about you, and who will seize the opportunity to use that information to undermine your authority.

See Examples of Integrity in Action in the Workplace

See Examples of Integrity in Action in the Workplace See Examples of Integrity in Action in the Workplace Integrity is one of the fundamental values that employers seek in the employees that they hire. It is the hallmark of a person who demonstrates sound moral and ethical principles at work. Integrity is the foundation on which coworkers build relationships, trust, and effective interpersonal relationships. Any definition of integrity you may find valuable and illustrative will emphasize these factors. A person who has integrity lives his or her values in relationships with coworkers, customers, and stakeholders. Honesty and trust are central to integrity. Acting with honor and truthfulness are also basic tenets in a person with integrity. People who demonstrate integrity draw others to them because they are trustworthy and dependable. They are principled and you can count on them to behave in honorable ways even when no one is watching or even knows about their performance. They form the core of the people who you want to hire if you seek a superior workforce. Examples of Integrity in the Workplace in Action Integrity is another fundamental value that you immediately recognize when you see it in the behavior of a coworker. But, it’s hard to describe adequately to provide a picture that produces shared meaning. So, the following are examples of integrity as it plays out- or should play out- every single day in the workplace. 1.  The CEO of the company kept the employees up-to-date on the struggles the business was experiencing with clear and frequent communication at team meetings. Employees felt as if they knew exactly what was happening. They were not blindsided by the CEO’s request that they all take a 10 percent pay cut so that the company could avoid layoffs or furloughs for the time being. The employees also felt confident in the turnaround plan they were following as they had helped develop it and they trusted their CEO. 2  John was a developer who had taken a path, that was not working out, to optimize the process the code was supposed to create. Rather than patching together a solution that was not optimum, but that would allow him to save his work, he went to his team. He explained the dead ends he had run into and that he thought that they could create problems for the continual development of advanced features for the software product in the future. The team discussed and worked through the problem. John scrapped all of his code and started from scratch with the team’s input. His new solution gave the team the ability to expand the product’s capabilities easily in the future. 3.  Barbara went to the women’s restroom and used up the last bit of toilet paper in her stall. Rather than leave the dispenser empty for the next employee, she tracked down the location of the toilet paper and replaced the empty roll. Sure, it took her five minutes, but she didn’t leave the next employee in a bind. 4.  Ellen missed a deadline for an important deliverable her team was supposed to have developed. Rather than throwing her team members under the bus, even though they hadn’t delivered as promised, she took responsibility for the missed deadline. She addressed the problems with her team and they put in place safeguards that would keep them from underperforming again. Team members recognized their contribution to the failure but there were no repercussions because Ellen took responsibility as the team leader. (They also recognized that a repeat failure was not allowed.) 5.  Two team members were discussing another team member’s failure to perform. They talked critically about the individual’s lack of skill and imagination. They criticized his follow-through efforts and his production. Paul entered the room in the midst of the gossip and discussion, listened for a minute, and then, interrupted. He asked the two team members if they had discussed their issues with the employee who they were criticizing? 6.  Mary, the HR manager, was approached by an employee who wanted to formally complain that her boss, a senior manager, was bullying her. Mary immediately investigated the situation and discovered that indeed, the manager was acting in ways that could be considered bullying. Other employees had experienced the same behavior. Several employees had brought to his attention how his actions made them feel (Brave souls.) Mary asked the complaining employee how she wanted the situation handled. The employee asked Mary to mediate a conversation because she was afraid to talk to him on her own. Mary set up a meeting and was able to facilitate the conversation. She also warned the manager that he could not retaliate against the employee. It would be a positive outcome to say that the manager stopped the behavior. But, unfortunately, he did not. This required the next step in followup. Mary finally went to his boss, a Senior VP, who intervened- powerfully and immediately. Then, the persons behavior changed. These capabilities were the deciding factors in whether she would purchase the product. Mark thought that the software would perform the needed tasks and told her so. However, he also indicated that he was not positive  and that he would talk with the other reps and the developers and get back to her that day with an answer. After talking with the others, he discovered that one capability was missing.  He called the customer who decided to purchase the product anyway as she had been unable to find one that did a better job. 8.  Marsha was responsible for producing a report once a week that was used on Friday by two other departments to plan their workflow for the next week. Knowing that she planned to take advantage of her vacation time in the near future, Marsha ensured that the report would be produced as needed in her absence.   She completely prepared another employee to create the report. Additionally, she wrote out the appropriate procedures so that the coworker had a guide in her absence. 7 things you can do to live a more content happy life

7 things you can do to live a more content happy life 7 things you can do to live a more content happy life With the stresses of daily life, it can be hard to find the time to reflect and appreciate the positive things in life. The demands of modern-day living can be overwhelming, leaving many people feeling that they never get a moment to themselves, which can lead to increased levels of stress.Taking regular time out to relax is essential in helping us lead a fulfilled and happy life. Making ‘me’ time a priority may seem selfish at first, but if you do it on a regular basis, it can  improve your overall wellbeing, and  reduce stress levels, helping you be more productive, boost your creativity and enhance your self-esteem.Spending time on yourself can mean lots of things. You may simply want to switch off your computer and phone and bask in 10 minutes of silence. Or you may want to escape from reality by reading a book or watching a film that helps your mind relax.Whatever you do, try to do it fully and completely. For instance, if you go for a walk try not to listen to music or thin k about what’s on your to-do list at the same time. Just concentrate on enjoying the sights, smells and sounds around you as you walk, after all  research shows that  developing gratitude  is good for overall wellbeing.Thankfully, there are lots of simple things you can do that will help you to feel happier, healthier and more content. Here are some natural mood boosters from the  wellbeing experts at CABA.1. Do something activeExercise can protect against the effects of stress by taking your mind off anything that’s bothering you and making you feel good about yourself. It’s widely  acknowledged  that physical activity boosts your brain’s production of ‘feel-good’ hormones called endorphins and can lower your blood pressure, both of which can make you feel calmer.Do something physical that you enjoy, whether it’s going to the gym, cycling, horse riding, swimming or playing a team sport such as cricket or netball. Just heading outdoors into the fresh air for a brisk wa lk is enough to elevate your mood. Yoga, t’ai chi and pilates all incorporate controlled movements combined with breathing, which may help you feel more relaxed.2. Get a hobbyActivities that help your brain switch off from life’s pressures are a great way to spend your ‘me’ time. Learn a musical instrument, do some gardening, go fishing, try your hand at painting or life drawing â€" just do something purely because it makes you feel good. Anything that takes you away from problems at home or at work will be worth every minute you spend on it.A hobby can also be an ideal creative outlet and help you meet and bond with other people. And it can give you a sense of satisfaction whenever you achieve or finish something you’ve been working on.3. Pamper yourselfHaving a massage is another way to help your body release endorphins while at the same time reducing the production of stress hormones. It can also help your muscles relax, while at the same time reducing your heart rate a nd blood pressure and boosting your circulation. If you’re not a fan of a massage, try having a manicure or pedicure, or having a facial treatment. All of these can  boost your self-esteem  and help you feel calmer, both physically and mentally.4. Take a napIf you don’t have the energy for hobbies or anything active, you could also  try recharging your batteries by taking time out for a daytime nap, but try not to nap for longer than 20 minutes or you could wake up feeling groggy. Find a quiet corner, switch off your phone and close your eyes.Alternatively, take a midday  meditation  break. Just 5 or 10 minutes of sitting quietly and observing your breathing could make the rest of your day more enjoyable and productive.5. Laugh it offExperts believe laughter reduces stress hormones and blood pressure while boosting the immune system and triggering the release of endorphins. When you’re laughing, your stress dissolves â€" even if it’s only for a few moments. So, try to make ti me during your day to read a funny book, watch a comedy or meet up with a friend who makes you giggle.6. Keep a gratitude logStudies have shown a range of impressive benefits linked to simply jotting down the things you’re grateful for. As we fall asleep, our thoughts set the tone for the next few hours of dreaming, so by writing down the things you’re thankful for, a few times a week just before bed, will help give you a peaceful night’s sleep.Remember to look over your log regularly or whenever you’re feeling down; it will help you appreciate the positive things in life.7. Stop comparing yourself to othersUnfortunately, social media can trigger negative feelings of self-disdain. It provides us with the opportunity to judge our accomplishments, appearance and traits against others. In fact,  researchers  have discovered that 1 in 3 people felt worse and more dissatisfied with their lives after visiting Facebook. Most smartphones will now tell you how much time you spend usin g social media apps, take a quick look, you may be surprised by how much time you spend idly scrolling through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.Try switching off completely, whether that’s for a few hours a day or a few days a week, try to reduce the amount of time spent on these sites. Instead, use this time to try 1 of the tips above. And remember, the reality is, people often showcase only the best aspects of their life on social media. This article first appeared on YourCoffeeBreak.

How to become more intelligent everyday

How to become more intelligent everyday How to become more intelligent everyday How does one become more intelligent every day?Outliers have a tendency to give the masses the wrong ideas. When we hear stories about a 7-year-old who can speak 14 different languages, or see a video of someone with a photographic memory repeating back every single person’s name in a fifty person auditorium, we sit back in awe.“How can they do that?” we say, our jaws on the ground. We begin to think that high levels of intelligence are more the result of nature, rather than nurture. But that’s just not the case. The truth is, we are all blank slates when we arrive here on earth. Sure, we inherit a few things from our predecessors, but ultimately our futures depend on our work ethic. There are plenty of brilliant people in the world who never amount to much, solely because they lacked the desire to refine their inherent talents and intelligence. And, on the other side of the spectrum, there are plenty of people who had the odds stacked against them and went on to do brilliant thin gs.People aren’t born smart.People learn how to work with what they’ve got, and become smart as a result.How?1. Smart people read (a lot)Sure, it’s discouraging when you come across someone who can practically download books into their brain and remember every single piece of information. But that’s far from the common standard. For most people, reading has to be a practice and a habit.Reading is a skill just like any other, and we forget that. Go too long without reading and stretching your brain, and you’ll find the task to be incredibly difficult?- ?especially when it comes time to recall what you’ve read.Smart people practice reading often. And just like anything else, with practice they get better and better over time.2. Smart people hang around other smart peopleMost people hang around other people just like them. This can be both a good thing (when done intentionally) and a bad thing (when the result has a negative impact). If you want to become smarter, you have to spend time around people smarter than yourself. One of my favorite quotes is, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”When you spend time with smart people, their drive, their knowledge, their awareness inherently rubs off on you. It raises the standard you hold for yourself. It stretches your brain in ways you can’t get elsewhere. And it makes you question, “Hey, if they know all that stuff, why can’t I?”Smart people hang around other smart people.“You are the reflection of the five people you spend the most time with.”3. Smart people love making mistakesPeople who understand how true intelligence is cultivated also understand that “mistakes” don’t really exist.Every misstep is an opportunity to learn a lesson, improve, and move forward.Which means, part of becoming “smart” is shifting your mentality away from fearing mistakes and instead embracing them. Why?Because they show you what you need to learn next, refine, and imp rove upon in order to reach the next level. That’s all the growth process really is.Smart people know this, and are very trusting of the process.4. Smart people see value in all types of knowledgeDumb people are the ones who say, “Oh, that’s not relevant to me. I don’t need to know that.”Smart people are the ones who say, “That’s interesting. I didn’t know that. Tell me more.”Knowledge, in itself, is subjective. It’s relative to your pursuits, your goals, your ambitions, and your current projects. However, that’s not to say that some knowledge is worth knowing and some knowledge isn’t. No, there aren’t enough hours in the day to know everything, but should you find yourself in a conversation about a foreign topic, why shut it out?Smart people embrace these random moments of learning, and see them as opportunities to expand who they are and their awareness of the world.5. Smart people work (very, very) hardWhoever thinks becoming “smart” is a cake walk ha s never traveled the path.Learning and improving should be fun, and you should enjoy what it is you’re sinking your teeth into. But at the same time, it would be naive to think the process was always rainbows and roses. The truth is, it’s hard work to dig into your craft and really learn it inside and out.Smart people don’t shy away from this sort of discipline. What they do is they create a life and a schedule that encourages it, forcing themselves to get done what they need to get done in order to remain in a constant state of growth. This is the key to improvement, and to intelligence in general. It doesn’t just “happen.”It takes hard work. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018

These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018 These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018 There are lots of ways to compare cities against each other. To name only a few, you could look at average income, expenses, housing prices, crime rates, the quality of schools, traffic, proximity to professional sports teams, weather, politics, job security and racial diversity. The list goes on and on. With so many different factors to consider, a simple list just isn’t enough information. We decided to cut through the noise using one of the most popular rankings around: Money’s top 50 best places to live in the U.S.Money combed through hundreds of cities and focused on three main categories: earning potential, the cost of living and quality of life. Researchers  focused  on racially diverse places with reasonable crime rates and more than 50,000 people. They ranked each city across a variety of different factors, including the weather, high school graduation rates, the length of an average worker’s commute and the ratio of income to home prices. We wanted to create a simpler v isual breaking down the main categories that people care most about, so we concentrated only on median family income, home prices and projected job growth (2017-2022). The resulting visualization lets you quickly compare different locations depending on what matters most to you.The first piece to consider is the relative size of an average worker’s paycheck. 30 out of the 50 cities boast median family income levels over $100,000, led by Bethesda, MD at $179,478. To keep that in perspective, median household income across the country sits just under  $76,000. Places like Bethesda and Brookline are actually suburbs of much larger metro areas, notably New York City, Boston and Washington, DC. In other words, a key ingredient to high wages is proximity to a competitive job market with lots of employers. But income is only one factor to consider when comparing cities. Home prices provide another critical angle because housing costs are typically the single biggest expense in any familyâ €™s budget, and a high salary might not go very far if your mortgage is outrageously expensive. Unfortunately, median home prices for the cities on our list are quite expensive. Brookline, MA tops the charts at an eye-popping $996,550, or about 7 times the median family income for that area. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Rock Hill, SC has the most affordable housing market on our list at just $175,000, roughly 3 times median income. This suggests that workers stand a much better chance totally paying off their mortgages in cities outside the Northeast. In fact, many of the places with the highest median incomes also have the lowest projected job growth. The top 10 highest median incomes have a combined projected job growth rate of 6.5%, compared with the bottom 10 at 8.0%. After all, why would employers dramatically expand payrolls in already crowded markets with workers expecting high salaries? All of which goes to say that there are lots of factors that go into ranking cities , and in turn, determining the best place to spend one’s career. If you’re interested in relocating for a job, there’s a lot more to think about than just your baseline salary. Consider a variety of different factors instead, and use our  cost of living calculator  to paint a complete picture. This article was originally published on HowMuch.net.
